She has a B.S. in Education from the University of Connecticut. She has been working with children and adults with neurological impairments, behavioral problems, and motor disorders for 22 years. Karen’s strength is in assessing your child’s needs then developing games, sensory interventions, and adaptive equipment to help them meet their physical, cognitive, and social goals. She has broadened her scope of practice to include Cranial Sacral Therapy and Sensory Massage and found that the touch therapies are a wonderful addition to helping children achieve their goals.

What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)?

CST is a gentle, noninvasive form of bodywork that addresses the bones of the head, sacrum, and the fluid surrounding the spinal cord (dural tube). The goal is to alleviate restrictions that are causing pain, decreased range of motion and stress. In infants, CST is led by the baby. The CST practitioner gently holds the baby and allows them to unwind their muscles and restore movement. At KIDSPACE, we often see infants with breastfeeding difficulty, torticollis, birth trauma, and other issues affecting development.

What is Sensory Massage?

Qi Gong (QST) massage for autism focuses on the sense of touch, the primary sense driving early childhood development. All children with autism have sensory abnormalities, especially of touch. Parents are trained to incorporate a provide daily massage. The result is that children with severe autism move into the moderate range, moderate children move into the mild range, and mildly affected children move into the normal range. Research confirms that in the first five months of implementing QST:

  • Touch normalizes by 49%
  • Language increases by 18%
  • Behavior improves by 32%
  • Sensory problems decrease by 38%
  • Parenting stress decreases by 44%
